The Russian Navy has never been comparable to that of the US or NATO in general, and the UK still to this day has significant presence in the Mediterranean.
The most threat the Russian fleet posed (and poses) is the support of a regime somewhere in a proxy war, and once they tried to leave the Mediterranean or approach the Levant then it's pretty much guaranteed that NATO would know about it and be able to counter it quickly and effectively.

I'm talking about it in terms of Cold War shit. Let's say this was happening a few decades ago when no great power really gave a shit and just intervened without particular care to their image or justification - if it was a nation that had US interest in like Turkey or a bordering nation to Turkey, then the most the Russian navy would do is try to block up their ports and form some sort of supply system to prepare landings of supplies and forces.
If the Russians tried this in the Mediterranean or beyond, then NATO naval forces would basically just iutercept, get in their way and prevent their passage, and if that failed then they'd just straight up declare exclusion zones and just straight up force them to back down like with Cuba and other examples. The navy could be used to force project, sure, but it's a shitshow compared to NATO (or rather, just the US one) and there's really little value or potential success in using it - especially since Russia is just regionally intervening and uses air power over anything else nowadays.
The Bosphorous would be a great asset to have in case of conflict, but blocking in the Russian Navy really can't achieve much in geopolitics (especially in the Middle East).

They're kind of neutral, but only because they've formed local militias and self-defence autonomous style regions. If Assad (and therefore Russia) get their way, the Kurds will be forced to submit and be pacified or flee into neighbouring countries.
The last thing Turkey wants is angry armed Kurds coming over the border, and if the war becomes primarily Assad vs. Kurds then it's very likely it won't be able to be contained and will spill everywhere and become a political dumpster fire of the Middle East.
The autonomy the Kurds have found for themselves in the civil war challenges the regime (especially since they've taken up arms), so Assad and Russia presumably hope to deal with them in the future.
It's interesting, though, because Turkey's main interests are:
