If there's a safe haven only 50-100 miles away full of people who share my religion and culture I would travel there. I would not venture hundreds, if not thousands of miles to enter a country whose language, values, and race were completely different from mine if I had even the slightest option to live within a culture similar to the one I already had.

There are millions of unemployed people all over the world, they don't have the right to immigrate to the US.
If you come to the US and your life would be in danger back home, you can apply for asylum at a camp. Then you become a normal resident once approved.
