Relationships change. Sometimes it's due to shady business dealings, sometimes it's sinister, sometimes it's because the two parties have a major difference in ideologies.
A lot of people have a friend that is now an enemy. A lot of counties were at war with each other and are now friends. Look at the United States, all of her former foes that they have engaged in arm conflict with are now allies or very friendly. England, Spain, Vietnam, Germany, Japan. Even during the American Civil War generals that were friends had to face each other on the battle field. It's even shown in comics where Superman and Lex Luther were best friends but now worst of enemies.
