It'll probably be a lot sooner than 50 years. You have to remember that environments can change so that a population at a set level can go from being just fine to being overpopulated. Given the importance of oil to our entire economy, including food, clothing and medicine, and given that capex in the oil industry has been going up by ~11%/year since around 2000, we're going to find that oil costs more to produce than consumers can afford.
Also, when oil was $100/bbl, a lot of US producers were issuing junk bonds to finance their operations. This widening gap between what people can afford and what it costs for oil companies to extract oil is going to precipitate a financial crisis that makes 2008 look tame. When that happens, less and less oil will come out of the ground, which is a major change to our environment. When food is getting harder to produce in large quantities, we'll stop giving aid to developing countries for a start.
