A lot of countries buy food from the USA. Production was still high in the USSR, and quality of life was surprisingly good for your average worker. For example, it went from a 20% literacy rate c. 1918 to 100% around 1940. Healthcare and education were universally provided (healthcare quality varied by region though), unemployment was virtually non-existent, homelessness was virtually non-existent, famine stopped after 1947ish, and workers had guaranteed vacations and plenty of time to spend with their families (which were intact and conservative like those in 50s America, despite women having lots of rights).

For example, during soviet time my father was a researcher in a military radio institute, but his salary was lower than the simple worker's one. So what was the reason for people to get any education, to do somethink new? Absolutly nothing. And after the fall of USSR he just became a businessman and take a lot of money. That's how capitalism works.
