If you don't have health insurance and you happen to go to some doctor or hospital that charges ridiculous amounts of money, you have two choices: Personally go to the doctor/hospital and attempt to negotiate a lower payment yourself or choose not to pay it at all and take the hit to your credit score, with the doctor/hospital likely refusing to do anything with you in the future other than stabilize you as required by law.
The second advantage of having health insurance with a $7k deductible is that, in the event of a major accident where you get severely hurt, you will ONLY have to pay $7k for treatment, which is better than paying all of it.
