It's actually hard to fail at MIT. I'm not kidding. I'm a German that went there from Switzerland for my PhD and your first year they do not take grades. You don't see your grades, they don't report your grades, you go to year two. In year two if you make a bad grade you can just appeal it and it'll go away. In year three you can appeal that you're, "so close to graduating," and they'll give you the credit. In year four you can apply for an extension if you fail a class and go onto year five... Six... Etc. I saw the undergrads doing this all the time. In PhD you can say you had duress from your teaching period and it affected your grades, claim PTSD, etc. And get free A's and your final work exempted if you appear special snowflake enough.

I actually got to work in the admissions office for two semesters and I saw so many applications that had me wondering how they got in and then I realized that the person that comes down to the office and collects files every day is the diversity officer and she gets to affix the accepted stamp wherever she pleases. MIT had added sexuality to their applications and they've been giving gay minorities tons of admits and reduced the whites. Also, if you're a foreigner expect to get in.
