It only ever worked in the US because for the longest time we didn't have Socialism or even the money/manpower to govern every nook & cranny of the country.
Thus the US was basically a giant free for all. People died if they didn't acclimate to "get a job or starve". Therefore the cultures that thrived were the ones that were highly industrious (Asians and Jews in cities) or self sustaining (Germans on the frontier).
Early America brought the best out of multiculturalism by suffocating cultural traits that are encouraged these days by Socialism. Even pre-LBJ Negroes in the South had good communities regardless of Segregation.

The only place 'multiculturalism' works in the UK is London and even then it's massively segregated.
You have certain areas where you're going to find more of certain minorities to make de facto ghettos and it's still segregated as fuck. People think multiculturalism works because you get white hipsters moving into some of these areas and gentrifying them, OR they visit to eat at local restaurants and consider that as working multiculturalism. It's delusional at best.
In other parts of the country, there is huge animosity towards large communities of foreigners and in the north especially, foreign families have to assimilate in a sink or swim test for survival. Assimilation in the north is far better than the multikulti society in the south.
There's a reason, other than it being a typical large city, that London has far more extreme types of crime than anywhere else in the country. There's also a reason why the most 'multicultural' cities in the UK were the ones that got fucked with rioting in 2011 and the less diverse ones were fine.

If you move to a foreign country with hundreds or thousands of others with whom you can form a community and do not have to learn a new language or culture, you will naturally err towards what you know because it easy. That's just how people work; the path of least resistance is like a universal law and it extends to human nature.
Using Chinese as an example, in the UK, they've traditionally had relatively small communities compared to Indians/Bangladeshi/Pakistani immigrants and outside of a few cities like Manchester and London where they managed to form 'China towns', they're mostly forced to integrate and within a generation, aren't too different from locals, aside from their looks, obviously. Some differences can linger, but they can still be washed out within a couple more generations.
Then contrast them to the Pakistanis, who basically have the majority in certain towns, cities, etc. and a lot of them do not see themselves as British, put their religion or ethnic roots before their country of birth, have their own distinct accent, culture, etc. because they're the result of mass immigration and it's obvious to see the friction problems their communities have with the wider population.
I don't see diversity as a bad thing, BUT, multiculturalism does not work. Too many different opinions that contrast with each other for it to ever work and you can't keep everyone happy. One thing I don't get about the modern left is that they see multiculturalism as integration, which it isn't, and use assimilation as a pejorative, when that is effectively what integration is.

When you have hundreds of thousands of Pakis moving into an area, they are not going to change their ways. Pakistani culture here is maintained because there are so many of them. They have their own accent, their own areas, etc. They did not integrate with the wider British community and continue in not doing so. They stick to their own. I'm talking about small groups. If you go to a middle class rural countryside village where you have at best, one or two families that managed to climb up the classes from working to middle within a generation, they're forced to be as British as they can be or they're going to have a shit time in their home towns. If the kids don't do what everyone else does, play out, play sports, steal booze from their parents and have house parties, they will soon find themselves isolated, so they have to grow up the same as any other kid here.
