While there has to be a core set of shared values (less and less as time goes on), the style of freedom people like Hillary prefer to support is "freedom to divide." Theirs are political stances calculatingly meant to drive wedges into electorates. Take her stance on gay marriage, for example. It was a rock bed principle of hers, repeated often, that marriage is one man-one woman . . . until the pendulum swung (for her, only a couple years ago) and she hopped onto the bandwagon quicker than a flash. Because more important to her than rock bed principles is a wedge issue, and through it attacks on religious freedoms. But you've already seen through her, at least; you're feeling the bern.

It "costs" a good deal more than that, in that his 'plan' by natural law devalues higher education. A thing (an object, a skill, a catskin) obtains value through its rarity. If everyone is subsided to obtain a college degree, there will simply become a new barrier to meaningful employment. In the end, nobody benfits from the billions of redistributed public monies but the institutions themselves (all, incidentally, bastions of progressivism - funny who Democratic solutions often entails public funding of that which is more prone to support them)--which can charge as much as they like since the government is flipping the bill--and the public figure who gets to dole out the funds.
