Swimming is part of it, yeah. But there are two other characteristics that elite units tend to look for. Heck, their entire selection courses try to bring these two things out. Will power/determination and decision making under duress.
Those and the swimming obviously are where they usually break . I was a medic attached to a unit's selection directing staff several years ago.
Asians and hispanics do well. Although many of them suffer from napoleon complexes for being short (asians less so) and therefore try to go above and beyond too hard all the time and injure themselves at a higher frequency.
The candidates that did the best were 5'11-6'1 average build (not terribly built looking, but not weak looking) average looks white guys. Big guys tend to burn a lot of calories and start falling behind on the endurance parts, both physically and mentally a little sooner than others. They're used to being top dog, and getting smashed like that gets to them.

Sure. Special operations selection is way more endurance focused than a lot of people think. There are bodytypes and mentalities that have an easier time than others. While there are parts where strength, power, speed, agility, etc. are all required, they're usually in the earlier stages of selection and are there to weed out candidates who don't have the base physicality required as well as those who are concealing previous injuries that may make them unsuitable despite otherwise being good. The bulky strong looking PT types do well here, regardless of body type. Smaller guys tend to do very well.
The endurance stages where they mentally break the candidates down through exhaustion is where it gets interesting. Orienteering is especially important as well as difficult when you're gassed. Some of these endurance parts also require some strength. This is where smaller guys tend to get injured and bigger guys get gassed and blacks get psyched out and take the path of least resistance.
Like I said before, big guys burn a lot of calories and it's hard for them to maintain that little bit of a calorie surplus to bring them through. Not to say there aren't hard fuckers who just keep trucking no matter what, but you can usually tell after a few days into an evolution who's got some left in the tank and who doesn't.
Hispanics and Asians tend to hold on to their weight just a little longer, and being smaller, seemed to be less affected by this. Same goes for shorter white guys. However, they would often push themselves a little too hard. Many got injuries and washed out on a medical. Come to think of it, I never saw a short black guy in the selections I saw. The handful that I saw were all average to tall.

Make sure when talking with your recruiter to not get suckered or pressured into something you don't want or something that's a compromise. If you're fit, college educated, and do very well on your aptitude test, you can basically get whatever you want. Go for the fastest route to special operations. I don't know how it is in Canada, but in the US it's usually an 11x option 40 contract (straight to Rangers) and go from there. Try to find the path you want first before talking to a recruiter. Crush whatever aptitude tests you have to take, then demand that path. If there are limited slots (like there is in the US with the 11x option 40), then ask if you can get a slot for the next rotation. Spend that time training.

Getting in as an officer is a bit harder, you need some actual experience leading troops so that takes more time.
Officers in csor aren't door kickers, they go on the missions but are in a command and control thing, they got to keep track of a million moving parts its quite difficult many can't do it
if your an officer and you make it through selection and get your badge you'll become a CANSOFCOM officer and they have lots of positions for people that aren't field related at all.
One officer on my course disappeared into HQ cause he had a decent resume and they wanted him for staff jobs, he never went on operations when he was in afghanistan just 1 road move where they ran out of gas and forgot they had a reserve fuel system for a couple hours waiting for a refuel to come get them...

That's not to say it never happens, but it's just rare, like less than 1% are even in a class in BO, and less than that ever make it through the whole thing.
