When I was young, I noticed my family feeling scared while in a mostly black neighborhood. when I got older, I felt like they were being racist and I felt angry at them for potentially harming my view of blacks.
Only when I got older did it occur to me that there is far more to it then being taught prejudice. There is a good reason for the reaction so my parents weren't necessarily in the wrong.
I live in a white neighborhood and it's surrounded by black neighborhoods. If I looked at the crime stats, you'd see an empty blotch without any crime and everything surrounding the boarders of the white neighborhood has crime. It's kind of crazy to think about it.
I used to think people were racist for not wanting blacks into their neighborhood but now I understand why gentrification is important to preserving a quality of life.
