Conservatism principles are the principles this country was founded on. I would rather not pay half of the money I earn from my hard work to be taken and given to people who feel they are entitled to free college education and free health care.

Republicans are not always free market oriented. Same can be applied for Democrats in regards to being socialists. The whole Republican and Democratic divide is more about location and catering to the voters in that location by being x or y. So you'll often see Liberals run as Republicans or conservatives running in the Democratic party.
I think it's safe to say that both parties are two sides of the same coin, but both of them really have no purpose in themselves. This isn't entirely bad because it keeps extremist ideology out of politics for the most part in terms of full parties. Of course, it will only be a matter of time until extremist ideologies start hijacking parties instead, which kind of already has begun to some degree, but will get worse over the years.

The original discussion was "would the north miss the south if we seceded." I said no, because we're generally poorer than they are, and it would probably help balance their books to be rid of us. It's also important to remember that a lot of America's agriculture and oil are in the South, and a succession would remove most of both industries from the US which would be very bad for the US, they can't really afford to lose them.
The main thing is that if the South succeeded the Union would basically have a guaranteed Democrat win every election, so some of the left states would definitely consider the trade worth it.
