From what I understand Sharia is quite explicitly laid out and detailed in its crimes and their punishments. Something on the level of the lists of things given in Leviticus.
Christianity is quite different. There is the 'Golden Rule' but Jesus never explicitly lays out laws and the earthly punishment for breaking them as things that ought to be universalized or even implemented by an earthly ruler. Since the old testament is 'fulfilled' by Christ, all those issued in Leviticus and elsewhere in the OT are a non-issue for Christians.
The guy is trying to claim that Islamic majority or power is not the common thread that unites the 'barbaric' laws and practices by claiming that something else (i.e. politics, social world, the way they see their communities/themselves). Somehow those factors are causes of behavior and thought process but Islam is only the consequence of it. Christianity as I'm trying to demonstrate does not fall into this kind of trap.
The ultimate question is, can you be a muslim without believing in Sharia? Isn't part of believing in Sharia wanting to implement it on a global scale? The answer will be the following, 'To be a muslim you do have to believe in Sharia as the best possible law but you don't have to bring about sharia violently (meaning, you can bring about sharia by other means)'. This is basically the outlook of the much discussed moderate muslim, the kind that countries in the EU want to bring in.
