Yup, just as the whole North. There are two faiths that are accepted in Seven Kingdoms - the Seven and the Old Gods. Plus, there's the R'hllor faith that has some supporters, but it's more controversial. Essentially the Wildlings are the libertarians of Westeros, normal people with wacky ideas who chose to live outside feudal society.
On the other hand the White Walkers are of different race (ice elves in the books, ice monsters in the tv show) that has a completly alien set of beliefs. They cannot be assimilated.

Stannis was actually a sympathetic (and awesome) character in the books, characterized by his love for his daughter and his iron will. In the show he's just "grumpy asshole with blood magic who kills daughter for lulz."

According to fan theories, this is because Jon Snow is secretly a wog, and also half Targaryen but that parts not relevant.
Him being a wog could mean that in the book he transported his life into his dire wolf's and thereby preserving it.
The book also has reanimation of the dead, which the show has only shown once on a minor character (Brothers Without Banners). In the book, Catelyn Stark is actually resurrected, but the show either hasn't gotten around to doing it or won't do it at all. Either way, ressurection of the dead is a possibility for Jon Snow.
