I think the show was a test, basically they took that one infamous dc story arc about how the joker raped batgirl, but gave the joker mind control so it was less tie her to a chair and rape her... yeah super edgy. The character has a funny genesis: Jessica Jones is a full-on rip off of the original Spider-Woman Jessica Drew.
Comic writer Roger Stern depowered the original Spider-Woman in the early 80s when her comic got cancelled, in a contrived storyline where the evil Arthurian witch Morgana Le Fey and Mordred kidnapped Jessica Drew. Chris Claremont of X-Men fame, did not like this so he grabbed the character and made her into a private detective.
Brian Michael Bendis wanted to do a mature audience detective comic with Jessica Drew where she would have a relationship with Luke Cage but he went full retard with his pitch/first couple of scripts, which had the infamous anal sex sequence between Drew and Cage and a first issue script that had Drew say "fuck" nearly two dozen times.
Marvel forbid Bendis from using Jessica Drew, so he retooled the premise to create a brand new character, Jessica Jones.
Some shit from the original premise carried over (Jones being much older) but after the first year, Bendis started creating a unique origin for her.
The stuff with Purple Man was part of this; it was not part of the original pitch for the character. Also, Jones was de-aged and made to be a classmate of Spider-Man who got her powers around the same time Peter did.
Jessica Drew also has a convoluted backstory: she's actually around 100+ years old, having spent a good amount of time in stasis due to radiation sickness. Her father worked for the High Evolutionary, who cured her via mixing her DNA with spider-DNA to cure her of her radiation poisoning but she had to go into stasis as the cure would take decades to fully take hold.
Hydra freed her from stasis (her dad was dead & High Evolutionary forgot about her) and Viper/Madam Hydra wanted to make her part of Hydra, leading to a convoluted running storyline where Viper is constantly trying to trick Drew into thinking Hydra "made" her.
