What does it actually mean to be "left winged" or "right winged"?
I have my ideas and opinions on things, but I don't really know where I fall on the spectrum so to speak.

Well the definition of each certainty depends on the context of your country. Right wing/left wing in the USA is different from right wing/left wing in Ireland for example. But generally I would say that this is the most simple explanation.
left wing is the school of though in which we try to correct all of societies imbalances. People discriminate based on race? Lets give blacks an advantage over socially privileged whites! Women are under represented in STEM subjects? Fine businesses money if they don't have a certain number of women! Liberals try to correct every aspect of society to make it all balanced and equal (micromanage it all) while conservatives believe that the best way to reach this goal is to give EVERYONE regardless of race/sex/religion equal opportunity. This my interpretation.

Thanks. Hmm, I don't know where I fall. I'd say I'm never set in stone on anything. I'd probably have opinions that fit somewhere on both sides. But I generally have a rule of thumb that it's impossible to make everything in society equal, no matter how damn hard you try, this world isn't equal, and it never will be.

I agree with that. I think we should give people equal opportunity, but in saying that, I do not at all believe we are all equal. Humans are funny creatures. We all have our flaws, we all vary greatly, and we all have our own unique set of personalities. But we're not all equal.

The truth is left and right wing become pointless when you actually begin to formulate actual opinions as opposed to general mindsets like 'liberal' or 'conservative'.
Discover what principles you think government should abide by and form your opinions around that.
For example, I, like many people here are libertarian.
I believe ensuring the citizens liberty should be the primary objective of the state. Why? Because everything else has negative effects for the citizens, and seeing as the state is working for its populus there is no reason why it should be doing malicious deeds to them. The only objectively positive thing it can do that is equal to all is ensure liberty.
What does this mean in practical terms? I side with so called US 'Liberals' on civil matters, and support drug legalization, gay marriage etc etc. It also means I side with US 'Conservatives' fiscally, as I believe the state should have no part in an individuals property, whether financially or else.

I still don't know which side I really lean towards though. I'm not at all what you'd consider patriotic. I believe in my country so to speak, but it has many flaws.
I'm against the likes of censorship, political correctness, totalitarianism, denial of freedom of speech.
I believe in hard work, labor, and putting in the effort to succeed in life. I think that shows good work ethic, and is one of many small stepping stones to being a mature, grown, functioning adult.
I don't believe the government should hand out money to everyone for the sake of it, but I do think government handouts can be helpful for those that are genuinely in need and will actually use it for the sake of their lives, families and opportunity to live in a society properly.

I never claimed to know a lot about politics. I never said any of my notions or opinions were set in stone. I don't believe I'm ignorant though. Maybe I am. Many of those opinions I expressed I still believe to some point. I believe in political correctness when it's needed, and will be as polite as possible when I need to be, but I don't believe I should have to tip toe around on eggshells in case I offend the wrong person.
The same goes with freedom of speech. People should be allowed to express their thoughts, opinions and ideas, but that comes at a cost if you're just coming across as a piece of shit human being. I think there are limits as to what you can consider being "free" instead of taking advantage of the term.

This might come off as incredibly stupid, but something I've noticed over the years of the political parties in power in my country is that nothing exactly "changes" if that makes sense. We've had many different prime minsters over the years, but nothing has ever changed so drastically that it has fucked us over completely. As far as I'm aware anyway.
