It's really not. It's about size and the relative number of nearby states )by this I mean nations). If you're a geographically small nation surrounded by a dozen other geographically small nations, don't expect someone from another continent to recognize your little chunk of land.

Not at all. Many US states have larger economies, greater populations, and more powerful militaries than most countries.

Literally who cares?

When is knowing the physical location of a country ever going to help you except in a completely trivial situation.

This is exactly the reason we make maps, so we don't have to go to the trouble of memorizing all this shit.

And all this is coming from someone who's actually trying to learn the names, flags, and location of every country, not because it's useful information, but because it's interesting trivia.

It will have literally no effect on my life to learn these things.

As an American, can confirm. My answers would be pretty much the same. They don't teach us county locations in Europe (or at least not in my crappy school in SC). Up to 25 States don't reach the population of a Republic of Ireland.

The freedom of movement on a federal level is more relevant here.

The disparity between states is quite present.

The main powerhouses are California, Texas, Florida and New York representing 1/3 of the population of the US.

Of course, in other aspects, there are states with insignificant population and territory, but with huge influence like Delaware, mostly because of company registers.

I don't see the point of questions like this. Is knowing a piece of trivia that can easily be looked up in 3 seconds on a phone particularly useful or necessary to know? All this means, is that many Americans don't learn European geography and they don't learn it because they probably don't need it. And why does it matter that it is France? Where is Togo? Where is Mozambique? Where is Burma? Where is Djibouti? Where is Faroe Islands? Where is Kiribati? Where is Saint Vincent and the Grenadines? Why does it matter?

I fundamentally disagree with this. I think it is more important to worry about what things we can and can't figure out than to just know facts we can look up. Actually those States are still extremely relevant when it comes to the United States. Our elecoral system is so fucked up that all those states get 2 senators. Montana, the Dakotas, Idaho, and Wyoming probably have less than 5 million people in them yet make up a tenth of the US senate. Funnily enough I'm pretty sure most of those states only have 1 representative in the house.
>>
>>55918394
Most of it isn't trivia and you only have to look it up if you're one of those people that needs a mnemonic to remember left from right.

Remembering these countries is as simple as knowing a little bit about anything, especially for the larger and more major countries. It's not rote memorization, because even if you care very little about the geography of Europe you could basically derive the whole thing just by knowing a couple major points and having even an inkling of an idea of how the world works, especially if the fucking map with national borders is placed in front of you. This is called using your brain.

Not knowing the major parts of Europe is a sign that you don't know anything about anything, so if you don't care that people can quickly recognize you for a moron, then sure, there's no reason to care about it.

Americans do this because we're a bunch of lovable fucking morons, it's not because it doesn't matter.
>>

Thats part of it, you can be an absolutely phenomenal country, but if you can walk across it in a day it will never be relevant. Look at Russia, its not that they are a great power house nation its that they are huge, if it was tiny we would just treat it like best korea.

There is a lot that goes into what measures the importance of a country, but size by landmass is a big one, as is military, location, GDP, and hundreds of other things, the point still stands though, most US states are on par with countries in europe. Its honestly a sore spot since they really could be countries but we decided it was better to be kuked by the feds.
