High crime rates exist for everyone in South Africa, the difference is white people don't accept it as just a part of life and don't ignore it if their family is doing it.
I have done work in some of the townships before, I was on edge but didn't exactly feel unsafe.
As for how hard it is:
Well the government makes it hell to apply for any government job and difficult for any non government job.
That being said, what their affirmative action is doing is creating small businesses which do not have to comply with their stupid regulations. So in essence they are making the whites in the country run highly efficient business with minimal staff.
