These people normally figure out what's going on, even if it takes the better part of a decade. The reason for the recent surge of them is that they're egged on to build an identity around what they believe their feelings are to the point where it becomes an ingrained part of them. Once they end up transitioning and realize that they actually weren't transexual, they kill themselves because they no longer have an identity.

Actually, the evidence (or, rather, the lack of evidence) says otherwise. Homosexual advocates have been trying for decades to prove that homosexuality is genetic to no avail. They have all given up trying to advocate based on genetic grounds, because the search has become futile. The argument they're now using, which has shifted over the last decade or so, is essentially "it's not genetic, but it's a choice that we should accept".
This, by the way, is why transgenderism has become such a forefront issue: because if sexuality is just a choice that we should "accept" regardless of the genetic reality, then why should we not accept all choices regarding human sexuality? By following their rationalisations to their logical conclusions, if person X wants to be a female despite being genetically a male, we should "accept" that choice.
The average person doesn't know this, of course, because the media are quite happy to let people continue believing it's genetic. That way they can instantly call anyone who criticises homosexuality a "bigot" for not accepting something a person was born with.
