Bringing materials back to Earth is prohibitively expensive compared to further mining and extraction on Earth. If anything, the materials from asteroids would be better put to use creating and maintaining an infrastructure in space.
Basically at this point, nobody sees any space venture as a possible new economy - they only see it as research or ways to benefit things on Earth. Nothing will get done in space aside from research until we can create an economy there that is self sufficient and does not need materials from Earth to maintain itself. Until then, space exploration will be done with various types of telescopes and probes.
