One thing I've noticed is these high population states are the main liberal states as well, such as new England.
You can have 20x as much land as a democrat voting land, and if the democrats have a higher population density, they will beat the lower populated states.

They actually don't. As population and representation increases in a state, the value of each individual vote goes down. Smaller states already have an outsizes effect on the voting process.

The majority of the states are blue in both rural and urban areas, that means there must be moderates and even conservatives in the democratic parties there. But in places like CA, the dems are mostly just city dwellers so that changes how things are.
Likewise, the republicans need to be moderate to get elected. Mitt Romney and Romneycare for instance.
