Everything seemed better then. The music, the fashion, economy, internet culture, job situation, illegal stuff and overall everything was more free.

Again depends in which ways, for example the AWB was passed in '94 and the generation of coddling was in ever growing influence. Also fucking boomers really started fucking shit up by then.

It's kind of funny to think that. Early internet was pretty awesome. It wasn't that entrenched in our lives, yet. It still had that sense of exploration.

Over time, however, it's become homogenized and usurped.

The demand for PCs is dropping, and with it, the financial incentive to keep pushing its hardware is dropping

Not at all.
People switching to tablet from their PCs never used i7 CPUs and state-of-the-art videogame graphics to begin with.

Graphics in general are hitting a cap and a state of heavy diminishing returns.
We can do super beautiful things but we need more and more people with more time, and therefore the product need to sell ever more.

That's why tech in the 90 was so easy, it was a middle ground.

I'm lucky my parents were extremely conservative spenders (probably has something to do with one of them being a Jew). I was using Windows 3.1 and then 95 until around 2003. And we had dial up for quite a long time and no cable TV.

Loved the shit out of a disc of old DOS games my dentists assistant gave to me when I was like 7. Forbidden from console games until I was 12 and had to share a gbc with my brother and this made me learn about freeware games and emulation. I experienced the SNES era by proxy.

I was born in 86'. My childhood was the 90s and early 2000s and it was a great time to be alive. I was able to grow up in a time before the internet, where everything was still a mystery. We got a Compaq Presario in 96' and an AOL subscription. I remember the early days of comic themed chat rooms and looking up South Park screencaps to print out and put in my binder. I remember watching 9/11 play out on TV in class; and the ensuing shittification of everything. I felt like I already lived my life and I'm just watching the world happen these days.

People ruin things honestly. I remember the internet being fun up until the mid 2000s really. Once smart phones and social media came around everyone was always on the internet and apparently felt the impulsive desire to post all their dumb information on it.

I remember once the internet was a place to explore. Sometimes you'd find new sites just by searching something. Now all I ever go to is Youtube, 4chand and a few sites to buy things or browse. Forums and communities are dead, which is sad.

Vidya is the same way really. As the games got better they needed to sell more and they needed more people to work on them, so they needed to appeal to a broader and broader audience. Now it's all dumbed down shit to appeal to every demographic. Throw the shitty $30 day one DLC in and games just aren't interesting anymore.

Nothing stays good forever I guess. The internet is no longer the mysterious adventure it was once, when only a certain number of people even knew how to really use it.

As a kid during the 70's Joan was know as the maker of cheap transistor radios and other junk electronics it's only during the 80's when Japan suddenly got cried as a amazing maker of electronics and was poised to over take America as the #1 economy. 1990's was when the bubble burst and Japan is still recovering.

I am replying to my same post in case you did not know what I meant, I was on the internet early for people at the time, but internet is what technically ruined everything. As a kid, things were so free and right. You left home in the morning and came back when the street lights came on, you had little girlfriends and boys were boys and girls were girls, all the wives stayed home while the men worked, everybody was white. I really do miss it.

stronger yes, smarter no.

They did have a lot more body and facial hair, what's that about? If anything people ruin people, there's no way that the internet has led to the physical evolution of men becoming more girly, instead people infiltrated the internet, the FDA, and the farms to create environmental influences that have ruined men.

I hate to break it to you but it's just people misreading things, we've all done it.
I used to read "Vaporwave" as "Vaporware", for example (dumb I know).
First off, Stain is very similar to Stein. Stein is more common, and people read it wrong. Most people are only barely literate anyway, especially children. Also, everyone pronounced it "Bernstein"; therefore they thought it was spelled that way.

"Play it again, Sam." is not in Casablanca. Darth Vader never said, "Luke, I am your father." Kirk never said, "Beam me up, Scotty". Carl Sagan never said "billions and billions", except to say that he never said it. Human memory is not perfect.

Internet had the same type of shitposting but it was everywhere, which meant fidonet, usenet and irc in those days.

Fundamentally there is no difference in computing or the internet for most people and purposes, it's just faster but way more bloated so it's about the same overall.

I remember joining a place called CyberTown back in the late 90s. It was my first experience with online chatrooms and my mind was just blown away. That was real virtual reality! You could even get your own little home and decorated it with player made furniture. I was literally just a dumb kid, but people were really nice to me back then and explained a lot to me.

Same in Ultima Online. I must have been the dumbest fuck ever, only using my fireball spell as mage. Because throwing fireballs was the shit in my oppinion. But people were nice, even let me tag along when they killed bigger stuff, sharing the loot with me.

I felt really welcome in both communities. Nowadays children have a higher chance of encountering a pedo on the net than actually finding people who welcome tham in their communities.

Diminishing returns. Games can only get so good. There's a few devs looking into expanding other elements of games besides just graphics. The VR headset things are looking really cool and should start coming out sometime next year.

Consoles also dominate the market. People don't want PCs anymore, they can do all the facebook shit on their phone or a tablet. If they want to play video games they buy a console. AAA game companies pretty much have to develop for consoles, so their nicest looking game has to work on that hardware.

during the dot com boom there were so many online virtual worlds and I tried a lot of them. One chat I remember having online was with an older girl. I was young and was saying stuff like I'll never smoke, I'm going to be a good kid. She said "you'll see when you get older" man was she right.

Also, people asked if you had a geocities.

Why are modern teens so retarded /pol/? I work with teens and they are the most brainless people I've ever had to deal with. They can't do basic math, have absolutely no logic at all, are clueless about history that was only 10 years ago... I just can't believe the stupidity.

born in 76. I road my bike to the library when I was 14 (1990) to learn how a high bypass turbo fan worked. I liked motley crue and Bon Jovi (slippery when wet). I used a 1400 baud modem to dial into bbs sites to chat and download warez in 1993. In college we had VAX system accounts, and they migrated the dorms to ethernet while I was a sophomore. This was when Windows didn't have a tcp/ip stack built in and needed add on to make it talk. Found Linux in 1997 and ended up with a fortune 500 after graduation and was the driving force kicking Windows out of the datacenter and brining a Linux kernel in, this was 2002.

I often think about the history of man and our existence being violent and unstructured for the vast majority of it. Technology advances exponentially, and I think it's safe to say we're not sure if we'll be better or worse because of this, however you define "better/worse". One thing I know is that short of going off the grid and living off the fat of the land in the woods, you can't escape the technical advancements (internet). I don't think the internet has ruined anything. It's causing great (not good or bad just a lot of it) change.

I'm a married father of 3 kids (4th on the way). I'll turn 40 next year.

>>55847460

Holy shit, is it just me, or do ALL the guys in that picture look red blooded as fuck? Even the "nerdy" ones look like they could kick the average male's ass these days.
>>
>>55850262

Well, everyone is a computer nerd in a sense these days, that's the point. It's hypocrisy. 99.9 percent of our lives revolve around the digital age, and computers are involved in virtually every aspect of our modern existences.
>>
Okay /pol/ which guy would you be in the picture?

>inb4 lonely guy

>>55858278
that's still true in middle America except people are fatter now
>>
i miss parting my hair down the middle ;_;
>>
>>55858452
but back then a nerd meant someone who actually knew how they worked on a deeper level

today's "cool geeks" don't even know how to use anything outside of a fucking ipad or phone and you can't even take the parts out of those. Of course I'm biased because I studied electrical engineering
>>
>>55857215
I went to school in NYC at one of the specialized high schools..... this meant there was a whole 2 page spread of of Chens and another for Li's
>>
>>55858610

I was born in '92, I remember the 'computer nerd' stigma very well, but looking back I just consider it a part of a bygone time. I never see people saying that stuff anymore, and if they did, I would kindly point out that THEY are using a computer too, and the conversation would either finish, or I would see some hilarious angry reply come in. Their choice, I guess.
