Started buying guns when I moved out to based Indiana. It's as simple as buying what I want online, getting it shipped to my friendly Vietnam vet FFL guy that only charges $15 for the transfer, and I'm on my way. Slick little Taurus 380 pocket gun for easy breezy conceal carry, a Romanian AES10b (cheap RPK-ish clone), and an M44 Mosin carbine to shoot, bayonet, deafen, and set on fire (mosin guys know what I'm talking about) anyone stupid enough to break into the house when I'm home. Of course the issue is, coming from a liberal college town in Upstate NY, that there are legitimate risks for my safety living where I am now in terms of crime. I'm in close vicinity to majority black neighborhoods and there's constantly gunshots/shootings reported from these areas. Back home it was just annoying, granola eating, Prius driving, brain dead, but harmless liberals.

Been trying to decide if I should get a Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 for home defense. The Mossberg is a bit more compact for close quarters, but holds fewer shells and is known for breaking around the plastic trigger guard. The Remington is more sturdy and has an alloy trigger guard, but is heavier and less wieldy I'm tight quarters.

I also want to buy a bolt action rifle sometime soon, as well. Preferably 20th century milsurp, but not a nugget because it'd mostly just be for taking to the range. My brother already has a nugget, so shooting one at the range is something I already can do. Anybody know where I can find a good used Mauser under $300-$350?

The most important thing you need to consider is penetration, so I'd ask do you live in an apartment, town home, house? How close are your neighbors because that's really the most important factor in the decision. You don't want to go to jail from shooting through or missing the intruder.

Besides, for a bedside firearm you want a rifle or a shotgun. Using a bedside weapon presupposes that you may not be in any sort of element to expect danger and mentally prepare yourself for defending your life. You want something that either has really easy shot placement, or where shot placement doesn't matter.

All the rumors are true. My friend bought a 870 express and it would not reliably eject shells. The chambers are rough and when chap birdshot shells expanded they would stick and you had to beat the stock on the ground while pulling the pump back.
My FFL dealer was telling me he quit selling Remington after he sold 20 12 gauge magnums (cant remember the model number offhand). And 11 of them came back because the action would blow open when fired. He contacted Remington to tell them about this and they told him the guns were fine. He said so you are telling me these 11 guns are fine and the the other 9 that didn't come back are broken? i lul'd cause the /k/ rumors are indeed true Remington quality control is SHIT.
