Am I the only person that thinks video games are a waste of time and promote slothful behavior?
I used to play video games occasionally when I was in my pre-teens but then found them to be a complete waste of time. About that time I started reading a lot more and couldn't be bothered to spend hours hitting buttons on a controller as opposed to actually learning something that was useful.
Now I'm in my mid 30s and it amazes me that some people in my age bracket still play video games. I see it as a complete waste of time because you don't get anything out of it. Yes its "relaxing" but it is a form of entertainment and I think playing video games is slightly better for your brain than mindlessly watching hours of television but ultimately I don't have a high opinion of it.
The main reason is you could use that time to other pursuits. Like going to the gym and getting in shape, developing a real hobby in which you have something to show for it.
For example in my spare time I learned a lot about working on my car and that saved me a lot of money. I got into gunsmithing and made some nice builds and then learned how to reload/hand-load pistol, rifle and shotgun. I read a lot and generally find most people to be extremely uninformed or unaware of the world around them in regards to everything ranging from technical data to political issues.
Is it just me or are video games just a massive time suck and promote degenerate behaviour. Every time I see a self-proclaimed "gamer" they are either skinny-fat or just plain fat and nasty. The have a sense of accomplishment for playing games but they never did anything, they just played around in some virtual world someone else created.

I would say the devotion of large amounts of time to ANYTHING that doesn't serve any practical purpose IS a waste of time and degenerate.
For example, a book that changed my thinking was The Book of Five Rings. In it, the author states how WHATEVER you do should accomplish two things at the same time.
For example, practicing martial arts is good for health and self defense and fun.
Practicing IDPA or 3 gun shooting is good for self defense and is fun.
Working on your car is a good way to learn about mechanic things, solve problems, save a lot of money doing work yourself and is very rewarding.
Video games are fun. PERIOD. They don't solve any other purpose nor where they designed to. Some might argue that video games "help you solve complex problems". So does doing calculus but one of them is considered a valuable skill AROUND the globe and the other is what vaping 30 year old manchildren do.

I agree for the most part when dealing with common mainstream games.
However I think there are games that are of such a complex nature that they can be useful with regards to brain activity etc..
The combat mission series comes to mind, dwarf fortress.
Most of the simulation style games require so much learning and patience that they are much like little jobs.

Some early games like FF and MGS actually created some sort of positive reward mechanism that helped me when I was young and depressed. They also helped me understand the subtleties in life. For autists who had no intellectual environments at home and a lack of information sources they are great buffers. I learnt so much from vidya and media in general.
There is ofc a limit and moderation is advised. Now that I know more I only game sparingly, either to understand the messages being relayed or for the points of view of young people in general, exposure is good when it's not abysmal immersion.
Also never underestimate the bonding properties of multiplayer games. Competition in an age of kekoldry creates community.

Yes I agree with you. I used to play them but stopped completely recently and that too after I just got a GTX 970. There is no endgame with video games, I'm right where I ended after I'm done with them. They add no tangible award after I'm done with them. And time is a precious resource better used elsewhere. Now during childhood there's a limit on the interesting activities so games are understandable but as I grew I realised they just hold you back(assuming you have certain goals in life).
One main exception though will be multiplayer irl with friends. I've spent some great quality time with my lads while playing multiplayer games especially puzzle and co-OP like LittleBigPlanet and stuff.

I feel like i have been wasting my potential all these years. Just recently I took a look at myself and decided to try to step away from video games then realised that i barely have any skills that would help me succeed in life.
Now that i'm stepping away there are so many things I enjoy doing now outside of videogames. Dancing, photoshop, video editing, collecting and learning how to fix pinball machines, trying to get back into tennis.

The whole point of video games is for entertainment. Just because the only thing people get out of video games are joy and entertainment, doesn't mean it's a waste of time. I've been thinking about quitting being an electrical engineer and learning how to homestead and farm instead. It's getting to a point where I think my actual work and productive hobbies of building tech stuff are also a waste of time and as fake as vidya. This isn't the 90's anymore, most people watching TV are bypassing all the commercials and just watching the shows. Nowadays networks are practically at war to created the best episodic dramas and stuff. TV shows today strive to be cinematic novels. They don't always succeed, but I think watching actual humans performing a craft with a long tradition (theatre, acting,writing) is superior to the vast majority of videogames where the vast majority of the time is spent mindlessly mashing buttons in a facsimile of combat.
