Why shouldn't the minimum wage be $15? I want facts and statistics, no memeing and conspiracy.

The higher the minimum wage goes, the more jobs get outsourced to China.

$15 is really high and you might be surprised what creative and service work can be outsourced to China in the wake of it.

Are you autistic?
I make minimum wage and work 40 hours a week, I end up with less than $1000 a month, that's not even enough to pay rent for the shittest appartment around
>>
>>55811476
Yeah it isn't nearly enough. I live in a rural area and it's impossible to live alone in an apartment working 40 hours a week. Maybe 15 is too much but the current is way too low.
>>
>>55811690
Then move somewhere cheaper, I could live on that just about anywhere other then major cities.
>>
>>55811080
It encourages millennials to study less or not even go to college because lol why would I go to college just to get a job where I have to work harder when I can just flip burgers for $15/hour and get the latest iPhone.
>>
>>55811080

1. All raising the minimum wage jobs is further encourage companies to ship as many jobs as possible to mexico and overseas
2. A doubled minimum wage means jack shit when everything costs twice as much, and now you're in a higher tax bracket
3. It removes incentive for people to seek out training for jobs which already pay ~$15 an hour.
>>
>>55812425

When you raise the minimum wage the prices of goods adjust because the producers will pass off the increase of cost of labour towards the public.
>>
>>55811080
Why shouldn't the minimum wage be $1000000 if it has no negative effects?
>>
Businesses can't afford to higher you anymore. The workers get paid more, but the employers get bled dry and can't keep up with increasing costs. You make more, they make the same. You'll probably end up jobless shortly after implementation. This happened in Seattle. The minimum wage was upped to $15 and shortly after, all the restaurants in the area closed down.

Also prices for other things would have to go up to compensate for your greediness.
>>
>>55812425
^ this.

No way should a burger flipper make anywhere near the same amount as a tech support guy or a welder.

Why the hell would anyone go to school when you get paid that much?

>>
>>55811080
Changing the min wage without changing anything else will just raise the cost of everyhing, more jobs will be sent over seas and more people will be laid off
>>
Because it will result in more job loss. Companies will cut workers hours, push even harder for robots to do more jobs, and try and outsource even more. What works in Sanfra, Seattle, and NYC, some of the most expensive cities in not only the US but the world, will not work for the the rest of the nation. Gradually increasing minimum wage to match inflation is a far better course of action.

Where does this number even come from?

Everyone throws around $15 minimum wage but what's the economic reason behind this? Why not $12, or $17, or any number that's been carefully calculated as such to minimise redundancy?

Am I missing something here?

Minimum wage hikes have never had any appreciable effect on unemployment. Any potential losses from the factors you're pointing at are offset by the increased spending capacity that results.

And while there are price hikes, those price hikes necessarily lag behind the wage increases, meaning there's a net increase in purchasing power. That's not ideological, that's simple mathematics; it literally cannot work out any other way, and if you've gotten through the 8th grade, it should be pretty obvious to you as to why.

>I live in Seattle
>This isn't true

For one thing minimum wage is $11 right now. Its a tiered increase so it'll hop up to $13 next for larger businesses, then $13 for small businesses, then $15 for large businesses (I want to say this'll happen sometime around 2021~) etc. etc.

There were a few preliminary reports that restaurants were closing due to the wage hike but those were proven false. Overall turnover rate (which is pretty high to begin with in the restaurant industry) industry has remained steady.

There are two major factors compounding this. For one, its simply too early to tease out the impact that the higher minimum wage has had on the job market. Secondly, Seattle's economy is going through a bit of a boom right now with Amazon and other tech giants pumping thousands of highly paid jobs into the city. As a result of this unemployment is very low and any deleterious effects that the higher minimum might've had are effectively hidden for the time being.

Seems like a lot to me. My summer consisted of doing wild land fire fighting, timber cruising, and brushing in the mountains of BC, it can be some pretty hard ass work.

I made 13-15 an hour and our currency is worth what? 20-25% less on average? If Canada was to do something similar our minimum would be 18 or 19 which just seems fucked. Then basic labor jobs would need to pay 22-24? an hour or people would say fuck that i'll just go make pizzas.

Your realize increasing the minimum wage is just a short fix to a long term problem and that increasing the minimum wage will just further de-value the dollar. Minimum wage should have never been created. It should be up to you to bargain you own price. But now illegal immigrants can even get jobs because they don't have to get paid minimum wage. Imagine a world in which minimum wage didn't exist. Bob goes to MCd and asked for a job. He's not willing to work for anything less than 15. Everyone else comes to MCd and are only willing to work for 15. Now mcd can either fail with no workers or pay people 15 an hour.

I work an internship that pays $20 an hour. When I get a full job at this company, I'll be making $79,000 a year. In in my early 20s and am on the road making more than many who are in their 40s. If the minimum goes up, purchasing power goes down to compensate.

People who make 14.50 now work hard industrial or agricultural jobs. Why would they keep difficult jobs when they are only being paid the minimum?

They wont. They would all quit and apply at fastfood/groccery/gasstation. And they qould get hired because they have proven themselves hard, reliable workers.

What happens then, to all the poor people who held these jobs previously?

What are you trying to do? Destroy small business, or the middle class?
>>

You have not been out in the real world, have you? Agricultural/industrial workers don't want to work retail; nobody does. Just because you think fast food is easier than an industry job (note: you don't have to deal with customers in industry/agriculture) doesn't mean another person does.

If a small business can't afford to pay their workers a living wage then their business model sucks or their product is not worthwhile. They lose.
>>
>>55817599
One, i used to work fast food and currently work industrial. If the wages were the same I would go back to fast food.

Your anecdote fails. Also, its not a failure if bith parties agree to the wage then big daddy government steps in all nu-uh, gotta pay what I say, style.

If your so concerned with poor people not hetting paid enough, why dont you donate to them? Why do you insist that other cover the expense of the need only you see?
>>
>>55817976
I work in transit and used to work retail. No way in fuck would I go back to retail if the wages were the same. You have a brain disorder.

If poor people aren't getting paid enough then we suffer worse than if they get paid well and/or have better benefits.

I take it you're content with the amount you're taxed at this time to pay for poor people's Doritos and Dr. Pepper they buy with their SNAP benefits.
>>
>>55811080
besides outsourcing and automation being possible negative concequences, there is the fact that it will act as a pseudo-inflation.
What I mean is
Apartments are X amount of dollars
Everyone on minimum wage gets a increase in wages. So they are willing to spend more on apartments.
So the cost of apartments go up as per law of supply and demand.

If everyone makes $100 for an hour of nearly worthless labor then $100 then becomes nearly worthless itself.
>>
>>55818298
Of course you would.

You dont spend 60hrs a week lugging around steel beams.

Its not comparable. Retail and fast food are legitimately easier than the extrememly demanding physical labor I do.

And no, I am over taxed, especially on my overtime. Welfare should be cut all together because it give people incentive not to improve their station in life. Also it is theft from the productive to the unproductive.
>>
>>55818654
Do what I do: drive a bus. It's easy, so why would I ever go back to retail?

$15 is the starting point of negotiation with those who do not wish to raise the wage at all. The eventual rate will be lower when negotiations happen.

>>55812694
>1. All raising the minimum wage jobs is further encourage companies to ship as many jobs as possible to mexico and overseas
Most minimum-wage jobs are things like fast food or stocking shelves--the sorts of things that can't be shipped elsewhere. Part of the reason people want to raise the minimum wage is because of the higher-paying jobs that people once had being shipped overseas--this put people out of the jobs they spent years doing and are the only things they had training for, and now they're working multiple minimum-wage jobs because there is nothing else, and that leaves no jobs for young people who need minimum-wage jobs to get experience.

>2. A doubled minimum wage means jack shit when everything costs twice as much, and now you're in a higher tax bracket
$15/hr. would not be enough to put you in a significantly higher tax bracket. As for things costing a lot, that's why the wage needs to be raised in the first place. It spent years not going up at all, even as inflation made costs rise. Yes, raising the minimum wage will likely make companies raise the price of their products and services, but not immediately. They'll raise the prices, then wages will have to be raised, and the cycle repeats. This is how it's supposed to work and how it worked for years before the government just simply stopped raising the minimum wage.

3. It removes incentive for people to seek out training for jobs which already pay ~$15 an hour.
The incentive to earn more money is to not be in fucking poverty. And anyway, training costs money. How are they supposed too get training when they're barely even making enough to survive?
