I am a physician and I know 3 very devout Muslims pretty closely.
1. Visiting Muslim med student from Egypt I knew in med school. Very well mannered and thougthful. I picked him up from the airport. He is a facebook friend. i helped arrange his living quarters when he visited here. He's anti-terror as far as I can tell. A great guy. He visited during Ramadan and had to fast and have a crazy schedule while he was here.
2. A med school friend, one of the top in our class. A truly brilliant person. Very down to earth and reserved. DEFINITELY has some extremist views on creationism and religion but is very sweet. I have never heard a radicalized political view of Sharia or something like that from him. If I ever needed a doctor it would be someone like him.
3. A fellow resident physician. Kuwaiti or UAE originally I think. Again I remember her struggling through adhering to Ramadan fasting while working 80+ hours per week. Incredibly sweet girl, very sociable. And again, no extremist ideology detected.
I have never talked to any of them about controversial shit in the middle east but I just can't imagine any of them even close to condoning or empathizing with terrorist views. I'm not super close to any of them but for all I can tell they are three of the greatest people I have ever known. I am 100% serious.

It is. Altruism is a natural mechanism that always is always selfish, people just pretend it isn't. Everything a human does is for himself/herself one way or the other. You help someone, you think you are doing a selfless thing? Hell no! Your reward is just internal rather than external in the form of sex/food/money, rather than just getting those you will feel good, you will feel as if you did something of value. Why? Because nature makes it so, nature puts incetives in your programming to make you do things she wants done. And you WILL profit greatly from being "altruistic" and more importantly pretending that you genuinely are.
People will like you more, people will be more willing to help you, give you things, because they too will be PROFITING from such interactions because they believe you will be altruistic to them because you were altruistic towards someone else.
