I would suggest visiting Gent too, it's a 20min train ride from Bruges and then you take the tram to the centre of town, you won't regret it. i studied there 4 yours and it far more alive then Bruges. You have the 'smak' museum there for modern art and the 'msk' for older art. and many things more to see.

Antwerp here. It is really safe in the centre of Antwerp. Although at least every fucking week someone is murdered on the streets here, I have never witnessed violence or harassment at any time, and I've taken the metro a lot, at all times of the day, even at night.
Antwerp is a relatively safe city, just don't go out of the city centre and you should be fine. Hell, i need to pass through a "ghetto" when i go out in Antwerp and I've only once encountered some Moroccans throwing rocks at the tram.
