You have to understand that Christianity and Jainism are really the only major religions on the planet that universally condemn violence. Buddhism does in a sense, but its mostly concerned with killing rather than violence in general. Pacifism is uniquely Christian out of the Abrahamic religions, and I think most people would agree that Christian pacifism goes way too far. Christianity prohibits you from defending yourself or taking any violent action against aggressors - something even the most devout Christians would be hard-pressed to support.
Islam specifically never had the chance for a Reformation/Renaissance period where the religion could be reconciled with the values of the new era. The goal under Sharia is to return the governance and jurisprudence to the laws and traditions of Muhammad's time, which is obviously regressive and problematic.
Also, unlike Judaism and Christianity, Islam has the issue of being a proponent of both proselytizing and establishing an Islamic state. Judaism was never concerned with spreading the religion, and in fact took steps to avoid it. Christianity, on the other hand, was never concerned with establishing a state. Given this, there is really only one inevitable outcome.
Muhammad, unlike Jesus and the Jewish prophets, was both a political leader and a general. Much of the violent passages in the Quran seem to be highly politicized attempts to aid Muhammad's movement. For example, Islam's ban on apostasy was most likely an attempt for Muhammad to discourage deserters. It's not too dissimilar from the laws we see in something like Imperial Japan. If Islam could reconcile some of its more archaic laws - the same way Judaism has been able to do - it might be possible for it to exist in peace.

Or they merely interpret it differently, as we find with many religions. Even beyond interpretations, there are quite a few prominent areas of Islam that have major implications and are not as clear as perhaps they should be (Hadith being the major example).
I do agree though that many people who support "moderate" Islam are either uneducated in the matter or are simply apologists.

There are many youngster (especially women) in my country who rarely pray, goes to clubbing, drinking, sex, don't wear hijab, etc, but they're still angry if we told them that they're Kufar.
