Some of the Russian countryside is fucking beautiful. When I visited St. Petersburg, I took a boat tour across Lake Ladoga, and a lot of the shoreline is empty and gorgeous.

Why? They're embracing the simple, traditional life. Personally, I envy that. Yearn for it, even.
Also, city life leads to feeling 'sophisticated'/'civilized', which leads to becoming blase and jaded, which leads to the kind of nihilism, decadence, and useless preoccupations that have ruined Western Europe. See France as the epitome of that.
In contrast to the French, the Germans used to be an ideal blend of the best of urban sophistication with a woodsy simplicity, straight-forwardness, and love of the natural. Unfortunately that has diminished some, they too have also become too sophisticated for their own good, but not as bad as the fucking Swedes.
I actually think the Russians get it right. As close anyone can at this stage in history.
