I enlisted in the USMC right out of highschool to fight in the Iraq War because I so loved this country that I felt obligated to serve.
It's been ten years. I'd take it back if I could, and the love I used to feel is more of a deep sadness. It's like living in the final days of Rome and watching it all crumble around you and knowing that there's not a single thing you can do to stop it.

I only feel nationalism in my heart yet I've no national identity, just hollow Patriotism. America is the bastion of multiculturalism and that can never change. The government is too big, the politicians are in it for careers instead of serving this country. The left is going further left and the right has to move left to fill the middle ground. Our military is intervening in everything and I don't even know why. NASA is practically in shambles despite being the most hope-filling thing the government has ever created in the past 60 years. I feel like I'm still living in the cold war despite being born after it ended. The public education system might as well not exist and I'm sure it's making people stupider in some ways. As a Catholic, I feel I have to 'hide' my faith or I'll suffer persecution.
Working towards success feels pointless as the left keeps pushing for total wealth equality. Being a millennial, I am surrounded mainly by fellows that support this fully. Like, why work harder or smarter if doing neither will give you the same results? Even if the right takes control of the country in 2016, I feel like it'd only stall the inevitable.
I want a unified country. One you can feel nationalistic towards, one that has a government you feel is honest and good willed. Such idealism will be the death of my spirit.
I'm too much of a good for nothing, lazy and beta to do anything to further the community around me or try and fight for what I think is right.
But overall, the worst thing about being an American is, by far.
