I want to study what's going on in the Middle East and Europe, especially in relation to ISIS and the recent terror in Paris. It seems like a complicated issue.

How far do you want to go OP?
Read Koran and associated texts, learn the prayers etc. to try and put yourself in a position of an ordinary muslim.
Next, read up on the history of Arab empires and their downfall (It's quite interesting)
If in addition to this you follow news, you should now have more understanding of islamic extremism than 99% of people.

pretty far. i want a really good overview of how things came to be in the region. how far back should i go? some people have suggested i go back to 1800s and start there. maybe focus on the rise and fall of the islamic empires, colonialism, and read up on us/russia proxy wars.
