The minimum wage in America hasn't kept up with the minimum cost of living with the possibility for upward social mobility.
The minimum wage should be what can be reasonably expected as the lowest income where it's possible to live with a modern standard of living wherein it's possible to rise out of the poor house via prudent financial management.
BUT raising it to where it should be from where it is in short order is a terrible idea. A smaller increase than the $15/hr being floated would be better for business and the current minimum wage labour pool. Going from 7 to 9 or 10/hr would be preferable.

You technically cannot NOT raise the minimum wage in a debt based currency. Inflation drags whatever the current minimum wage is down and, once you reach a certain point, it becomes more profitable to just market to other first world countries, rather than lower your prices for a population that has basically become your gaggle of serfs. The minimum wage does not dictate the price of things on its own. You don't see companies turning around and selling the Indians and Mexicans they hire out-of-country a tee-shirt for a nickle.
Inflation is not caused BY raising this minimum wage, unless my very basic understanding of economics is fucked, as no additional money is actually being printed. You're simply saying "You're paying people here to work, you have to allocate x amount of the resources you've made into paying them." Prices will go up for some things, while other prices will remain the same.

The US federal and lower governments literally make it more beneficial for people to work less, because there's a gulf between benefits at a low income where you're actually making more and the point where you're relying entirely on your own income to support yourself. And there are ZERO programs to bridge this gap. From personal experience at my first job retail/grocery has already been running on a skeleton crew for a long time. These jobs can't go overseas and barring automation can't have any fat trimmed at the store level.
Trimming non-corporate management is most likely, the corporation that I worked for then had 15 different management levels between me as a cashier and the lowest level guy at corporate.
Not to mention many retailers, like Hobby Lobby, already pay their employees between 10-14 per hour as is with no problems.
In the end since consumers will be unwilling to tolerate price increases and store level crew is already bare bones the companies will either just absorb the cost and shareholders will make a little less. Or a bunch of middle management gets axed, and they're a bunch of cunts anyway and deserve it.

Yes, everyone can work harder, look harder, educate themselves and get a good job, BUT NOT ALL AT THE SAME TIME, it will literally never work. The only way this system works if there's a portion of the population doing shit jobs and barely meeting ends, if it all. That's the inescapable consequence of how the system works. We can't all be rich, we can't all have a good job. A a livable minimum wage is the only thing that allows this system to continue to work for the forseeable future.
