The reason why we are worried is because we want to live in a really good neighbourhood with basically non existent crime rate, mostly white, a lot of really good public schools and overall good facilities. Basically we want to live in a rather large house in a white bubble. And that comes with a price tag so we assume half of our income will go to mortgage alone. Add to that bills, organic high quality food (vegetarians), private tutouring and instrument lessons for kids, saving for college funds and early retirement and I doubt we will be left with a lot. For me it was less than 2k/year after textbooks and financial aid. Of course grants depend on your finances.
The full price would be around 5,000$/year if you got nothing from the government.
And there are many opportunities to take those credits to a 4 year school so you only pay half price for that.
And no I don't currently have children, I'm still preparing for that. I just speak from how my parents did it and from other people I know.

Well I am currently taking a student loan for my studies since my parents didn't saved up for me, and I refused their offer to pay from their monthly wage a big chunk for it. In theory, I think I prefer the idea of kids paying for themselves do they better appreciate the cost of their education (since they will pay it off, not mommy and daddy) but on the other hand I see my boyfriend and all his rich friends not having to worry about tuition fees because their parents saved up.
