It's the 21st century, enlightenment is a google search away, for most of human history people would kill for the amount of knowledge anyone with internet can get in seconds. So why are so many people so ignorant?

No one wants to actually sit down and read it all.
But seriously though, general knowledge has improved by leaps and bounds and the breadth of the knowledge as well. The masses have always been uneducated and ignorant, they are much less so now.
Why would anybody willingly look up facts that challenge their preconceived world view?

People want most what they cannot have.
If knowledge is difficult to acquire, it will be seen as precious. If it is readily available, its value is lost.
If you actually went to university and studied something real you would know that there is quite a lot of information not freely available on the internet it is either not there at all and maybe in books, behind paywalls or so obscured by the such ridiculous mountains of shite that you will never find it.
Before the internet a massive amount of information was still available in libraries but people didn't know it, who has time to read 10,000 books most of which contradict other books
