Nomadic people settled down in fertile areas, and adapted to those regions. As they prospered and spread, they came into frequent contact with other people who had come from other fertile regions with different features. Thus, there were different "races", people from that fertile place versus people from out fertile place. Then when conflict arose, they would go to war, and one would conquer the other, and one race would be the conquered people.
Not that this really makes sense in a modern integrated society where people around bound to their native soil.

If by "racism" you mean the science of racialism, i.e. categorizing people based on race and analyzing differences in intellectual capabilities between the races, then yes it appeared in the late 19th century in Europe and America.
