I know. I have two friends who were both completely fucked up by being brought up by their christian fundamentalist in the US. Even though they had enough money, they often didn't buy enough food for them. They were generally just felt to feel guilty everything they liked. It was in large part because their Dad is a bit of a selfish asshole anyways, but the issue is that he justifies his behaviour to himself by his faith. He is sure by raising his family in such a humble way and treating them so strictly that God will reward him and them in the afterlife or what have you.
Not to even think of the the fucking christians in a america asking people to send all their money to them and god will cure their cancer. That shit is fucking evil.

That's just basic morals and values that every non shit person learns growing up in every country. 99% of what I know about those things I didn't learn in church. Sure that's part of it, but you certainly learn about hell and burning there if you commit enough sins. If some of this stuff is taken very literally, People can end up doing stuff that a normal person wouldn't think is very moral.
One issue with religion is that it's basically cognitive wall filler. Anything you don't understand or feel anxious about, you can very intuitively say "God made it" or "God will fix it if I pray to him". This can be great sometimes, especially when it has a great moral code to go with it, but some people can use it to justify bad things too. And because it's dogmatic they don't really challenge themselves to think "is this really a good thing to be doing for any reasons other than the fact that I sorta feel like the bible says it's okay and I feel like God probably wants me to do it?"
In any case you just have to look at the amount of christians doing bad things under its name. Christian television shows asking for people to donate all their money to them to make God heal their cancer is sick. I don't see how it's anything else.

I've only met 2 other confirmed atheists (may be others who aren't as vocal) out of about 200 people I've interacted with at my college (which is a state community college). I'm not vocal about it myself and have only alluded that I'm an atheist to about 5 people at most when people ask specifically, as it is a social death sentence to be anything like a fedora atheist around here. In fact, one of the two others I met was the fedora kind and I watched as people disapproved of him and the teacher gave a paper he wrote a bad grade because it mentioned that he was an atheist (bad taste I guess, but it was relevant and the paper had some of the only correct grammar in the class).

At my community college most of the students also have the habit of forming a prayer circle and praying before tests. Not participating in these is really the only clue I give that I'm not a Christian but I imagine all of them are if they're actually doing it.
If you're in an urban area or a "real" college instead of a community college there might not be so many deeply religious people, but I think tradition runs a little deeper here (NC) than it does in Texas, even though a lot of the culture is superficially similar.
