The reference for that passage of the text was from J. Richard Udry's "The Nature of Gender". Which uses anecdotal evidence to support his claim about how uncommon it was. His first-hand experience can hardly account for that entire time era. Oh, and also from the same fucking book, Udry states that now his papers when peer reviewed have the term "opposite sex" crossed out and replaced with "the other gender". He's showing that society itself has changed the meaning from his original intentions.
