Why do country's defend illegal immigration? Do they believe that there is no purpose to the immigration process and that everyone's just being bigots?

It shouldn't be the role of any nation's state to import refugees and support them, especially if they're anti-assimilation and bringing a militant ideology with them at odds with the native culture of your citzens. That's essentially treason. The only immigrants which should be allowed are proven law-abiding skilled workers, which bring a net gain to the country.
The only real way the people of one nation can help another is to stop allowing interventionist and "preventive" wars which destabilize the refugees home regions. The conflicts in the Middle East have left a mass of people impoverished and uneducated, thus highly susceptible to extremist actions and willing to give up what they have (i.e. nothing) to get back at the West and take a slice of that pie for themselves. If people want to help refugees, elect competent loyal leaders who won't start conflicts.
The state should look after its own citizens only. Bringing in foreigners to destroy your own culture is unethical and helps no one.
