Arabs most notable contribution to mathematics was the use of the base 10 system we use today.
It is not the most useful per say, but the easiest to use, like a lowest common denominator.
Now, if it's the easiest to use and understand, why did the Arabs of all people come up with it? How did they 'invent' it while other great civilizations (Greeks,Romans) use out dated mathematical systems?
It's easy.
In the times of the Greeks/Romans, higher mathematics was the realm of the elite and their disciples, and only them. They deliberately used systems that the common man wouldn't understand unless shown how, this was to help keep people from experimenting for themselves and questioning the findings of the 'scholars' of the day. Much how the elite would speak Latin instead of Roman or Greek.
So, they deliberately used harder to use systems because they could. Admirable in a sense.
Enter the Arabs, they used (did not invent it the Egyptians did in 3000BC), base 10 because of its simplicity.
The great irony is, people love to lord the fact that Arabs used base 10 before Europeans like it was some sort of achievement, but what they fail to realize by their own admission is that it's a mark of how short they measured up to Europeans.
Arabs were sitting on the perfect starting point for mathematics and achieved very little in that field. It wasn't until Europeans widely adopted it that a lot of significant advancements were made.
