Most of the military guys I know personally or have spoken to on /k/ think drone policy has saved thousands of lives of our troops, and are better at pinpointing combatants instead of civilians than a ground force.

Yes, American energy firms have made stakes in Iraq and Afghanistan since then, but China and Iran are making the biggest plays. If the governments are our puppets, why are we letting them make their own trade deals?
2. Why would we still claim to be allied with KSA, and risk destabilizing our relationship by extracting Iraq's oil (which has half of SA's production) for pennies? If this was really the goal, you would see OPEC's negotiators have a shit fit, which they didn't really.
3. Why has everyone who has suggested taking a portion of the oil in return for Iraq's "liberation" been laughed out of policy rooms?
I admit that the US military has been used to keep private economic interests generating revenue, with their expenses (of asset protection and oppressing people who don't take kindly to being impressed, threatened and stolen from) taken on by the taxpayers- since before the War of 1812 and the whole gun-running and privateering business after the revolution.

Why else would we do it? We didn't intervene in Rwanda or the Congo. We intervened here, twice, or three times if you count our current operations. Afghanistan Ive seen mentioned was for a pipeline from Central Asian oil to the ocean, bypassing Iran.
That said I really don't have any idea how modern geopolitics works. It certainly seems to have transcended things like nations, religions, and languages. For all I know there is a community of oligarchs behind every country from Iran to China to Russia to America which operate in concert for their mutual benefit, merely playacting as ideological enemies. Maybe there is a benefit from ISIS selling the oil instead of Iraq selling it. It's all very complicated these days. But certainly our Republican candidates are calling for what's shaping up to be a 3rd invasion.

Good question. I've been wondering the same. But I think the history shows that instead of specifically extracting resources from nations (like traditional colonial plantations did), the US instead primes regions into ones that can facilitate trade, and protects them from being ones hostile to trade. This of itself is a huge economic interest, but not one with a 1:1 dollar correlation.
Look at South Korea, Vietnam, West Germany, or the Balkans.
What specific interests in terms of resources did the US have? Why throw so many men and so much money to institute the US' geopolitical strategy (to 'stop the spread of X') when the same could have been achieved by bombing it all to smithereens? Yet in the end, it turned out that it was in the economic interests of the US for nations to retain their sovereignty and prosperity.

No merit. Unocal backed out due to the instability of the region and security concerns. The closest anyone has come to this since then was China. Even if there was no possible economic interest in Afghanistan whatsoever, the popularity for invading it was so high that Congress would have done so anyway.
