Islam is a tool used by the powerful to manipulate the weak and stupid, just like all religion. This makes absolutely no difference to the rabid zealot however, he believes with every fibre of his being that what he fights for is true and right.

Neither options is palatable to the current political and social mindset of this generation. I read a hadith once. Something about 100ft tall people walking around. Problem is that because there's so many different interpretations as you said (e.g oh you have to use logic and reason to see that it probably didn't happen to I can cherry pick the theory of evolution to say 100ft tall people existed), there becomes a lack of a unifying voice, so some guy that lives in a cave in the Afghan mountain's interpretation is just as valid as the interpretation by a Saudi Prince. You can see why this muddies the waters.
Of course there's also the general point of being annoying and using the clause of being "religiously discriminated" as a tool for your own use. Not saying that there's something wrong with using that, but one trick ponies do get annoying over time.
