1. What LANGUAGEs does /pol/ speak and....
2. What LANGUAGE(s) will prevail by 2100

There are currently ~7000 languages in common use globally but this is expected to drop by 90% by 2100
>>
>>55574552
I speak:
English (native/primary)
French (basic conversations)
German (enough to get by as a tourist)
Russian (as German)
>>
>>55574552
I reckon English, Spanish and Chinese will prevail - Arabic might get traction but they are increasingly backwards looking and will prob eradicate themselves as a concept - thus nobody will bother to speak to them as equals.
>>
I know English and somewhat enough French to have a basic conversation.

My wife however knows English, Spanish, Dutch, some German, some Chinese, and some Japanese. I don't know how she can keep track of so much.
>>
>>55575424
and what for 2100?
>>
>>55575592
English, Russian, Chinese and Spanish. The other languages will be unimportant. I still think that English won't achieve complete dominance and people would still speak national languages.
>>
>>55574552
Dutch - native
English - native
French - fluent
German - conversational
Russian - basic
>>
1. Spanish, English
2. Spanish, English

I speak English and Spanish fluently. I've been trying to get into German but we know that language won't last so I might as well be studying Chinese and Russian.
>>

1. Russian (native), English (shitty level)
2. English

Swedish, finnish and english. Basic german, can get by but not really have a discussion.

With swedish also comes norwegian fluently but they are so similar it does not count.

Danish if read. Their pronounciation is so retarded it is impossible to understand when they speak.

Not knowing atleast an extra language is pretty degenerate imo. desu senpai

Dutch
French
Slovak
English
Chinese

get rekt
>>
>>55574552
Romanian - native
Italian - I didn't learned it but it's pretty similar to romanian
English - medium
German - Can make conversations spontaneously but i need to review a little to remember the grammar & some advanced elements. (High School level basically)
Korean - I know the pronunciation but trying to read fluently .
>>
Oh and.....

2. What LANGUAGE(s) will prevail by 2100.

Probably english. Can see arabic rising too but i think english is too intertwined with popular culture to be pushed down.
>>
>>55575935
I studied chinese for a year and never got past pleasantries...
I got a Russky waifu and can just about manage on my own in moscow now when i visit.

Russian is easier, women hotter, i'd focus on this first

English

Able to read enough basic Spanish to understand most signs

>What languages will prevail by 2100

ENGLISH
Urban slang
Spanish
Chinese and Japanese
A few european languages but will mostly be used as conversational spoken word

We don't even have America to thank but the English Empire for spreading this wonderful tongue in which we speak and write.

oh pls, i can do that in twenty languages
>>

I worked in india for 9 months once and they used to say that the only things they thank us for til today are the railroads and the language (they have 50+ regional languages, nobody cares about hindi so theres 700m + english native speakers not officially recognised there too)
>>
>>55574552

I'll use the European GER system to put my profiency levels into perspective. These are the levels, starting from total beginner to native speaker: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2

>German C2
>Englisch C2
>Croatian C2
>French B1/B2
>Japanese B1/B2
>Russian A1~B1 (just startet, so I don't have any actual certificate, but it's easy for me b/c of croatian)
>>
>>55576939
here, here ;-)
doesn't really count I reckon i can do that in every latin and cyrillic language, gotta b 40 of those - I'd imagine 20 is an underestimate actually
>>
>>55574552

Hungarian - native
Romanian - was born there, left as an adult
German - from very early childhood, but let it fell into disuse for 25 years, so now have a sophisticated accent and a meager active vocabulary
Engllish - well, you can see it

Languages I was taught but they did not catch:
French - the school abandoned it after a few years but I know enough to read tech books
Latin - meh. Had to help my children with their Latin homework recently, discovered how much knowledge have I lost.
Russian - meh squared, can read basic stuff

Languages I taught myself or am just winging it based on known languages:
Italian - can read and understand spoken language based on Romanian and Latin, as the Romanian anon said above, but also from having worked there for a while. BTW Italian AAappears to be closer to Romanian than Romanian to Italian; knowing Italian doesn't help so much in decyphering Romanian as vice versa
Portuguese - same story. Interestingly, Spanish is much harder to decypher.
Pali - I'm sort of a sympathyzer of Theravada, that's why. Fucking weird language, tho.
>>
>>55577067

>>

I did see a LOT of poo....
I was swimming on a beach in Kerela in some downtime for a week, then I woke up early and saw like 500+ fishermen shitting in the sea at dawn.. then i realised the beach and sea were COVERED in shit

-was horrid!
>>
>>55577249
i read cyrillic fluently... i didn't really count the languages (20), my point was that anybody can read signs, i can read basic japanese signs like exit or entrance, no big deal, every half intelligent person can comprehend any language on that level within a day or two... speaking a language, well, that's something else..
>>
>>55577307

>>

I can read cyrillic with no problem, croatian and serbian are basically just two dialects of the same language with serbian using cyrillic
>>
>>55574552
Croatian
English
Italian

Latin
>>
English, with some Gaelic and Spanish.

Never really into Latin languages 2bh. Only did Spanish cause of School.
>>
>>55577574

don't ever tell them that tho lol.
yeah, if u have serbian and cyrillic then russkie aint gonna be a biggie druggie
>>
>>55574552
Franch and Chinese will prevail. Idk about Spanish.
I speak english, some Spanish and a little Chinese.
I want to learn nip so I don't have to wait 500 years to get a localization on video games.
>>
>>55577713
they all know that
>>
>>55577678
we (in the UK) aint taught shit, perhaps rightly so. After waterloo it was clear that our colonialism was going to win - thus the language.
The Spanish had some longstanding penetration but we'd already made sure the Caribbean was ours thus they'd have to also have to contend with us.

Surprised you got some Gaelic, I take it you're a Highlandbro then?

yeah my late grandpa would propaply smack me for saying that, but it's true.
Serbian and Croatian are closer to each other than for example Bavarian dialects are to standard German. Or Swabian, can't understand those fuckers at all.

Serb - native
English - very good but i speak it with the most stereotypical accent ever
French - barely, if i'd try to speak it i'd sound like a nutjob

>What LANGUAGE will prevail by 2100
For all intents and purposes, all of them. The ~6300 that will go extinct are pretty much all some jungle mumbo-jumbo in Oceania, South America and Southeast Asia
>>
>>55574552
1. Only English because American
2. English, Spanish, Chinese for sure.
French, Russian, and Japanese will be important but less so than the first three.

Which do you think will prevail between Chinese and Spanish?
>>

'Serbian' and 'Croatian' are the same language. The difference is like between British and American English. (i.e., mostly a few pointless spelling rules.)
>>
>>55578088

there's more, repeat, much, much more difference between croatian dialects than croatian and serbian (montenegrin and bosnian ftm) in fact the language is called BCS by western linguists
>>
>>55578088
>Which do you think will prevail between Chinese and Spanish?

Yeah that's an interesting one, I'd also group Russian in there - remember that all of the ex-soviet states are 2ndary russkies and russia is making crazy pacts allover to bring them together again under a union.

I'd say theyre all going to be regionally significant. Spanish in the americas prob. all the way up to San Fran being 1st lang Spanish/same depth on east coast.
Russkie across the CIS/Ex Commies and Chinese all over APAC.

But english will be the predominant 2nd language globally.
>>

Most countries who have a fixed national language will remain in 2100. For example, swedish, dutch, latvian and such will most likely remain. It would be more doubtful if the romani language would remain.
