People will assume you're racist in London unless you greet them by saying "as-salaam alaykum" and end each sentence with "allahu ackbar" or "Allah save the Queen". In London, Luton, Leicester, Bradford, Slough, and a few other places in West Yorkshire or something, RP is not diverse enough to mix in with the population, though you should be fine everywhere else. There is a real hate for regional accents. The one accepted accent is Queen's English and every other accent is treated as if they were a language from a foreign country outside of its borders.
English people tend to prefer it if you speak plainly so you will only be regarded as posh if you use posh words. There are some accents that are considered posh or 'snooty' but those are mostly just joke accents rather than accents people actually use.
If you plan to live somewhere for a long time then learn the regional accent. You don't want to be an outsider for years on end.

Don't worry about accents too much. There are different varieties of English.
Lesson 1: listen to the radio.
Radio is easy to access. You can listen to British English, US English, and loads of other varieties. South African, RP, Austtralian.
Lesson two:
Immerse yourself as well as you can.
I learned Spanish and French by living in those countries. Maybe not an option for you. Read English newspapers, literature, etc.
Learning a foreign language is very difficult. But after some time and effort it will get easier.

I think that accents are pretty important, because it defines your social position, as well as your education level. Also, some accents here in Spain makes you sound "less intelligent", even if it's not true. I find RP the most comprehensive and neutral british accent.
Probably, I've been talking with you in some /int/ thread where I said I've been in contact with Nigel Carrington (voice actor in Dear Esther videogame). He told me that he used RP there. Right now I'm using his recordings as a reference. Vid related:
