Most colleges don't cost 20k+ unless you live there. You need to separate education cost and living cost at the very least. The primary reason why college cost has gone up is because the gov pays for it.

If anything we should subsidize college for anyone who wants it, this way there is still some sacrifice and personal investment for those who want to go to college and its not something people just mindlessly do after high school. Similarly we should also do a better job of promoting trades and offering training for them. In most cases I think it's a lot better to go into a trade than get a stupid major you aren't at least passionate about.
I also think if this were to happen that community colleges should be expanded to focus on general ed and intro level classes then students can transfer to a university once they know what subject they want to focus on. I majored in computer science at a pretty good college and while I definitely feel like I got a superior education in that regard there is no real advantage in spending so much money on general education classes that you literally will never use.

The recruitment agency, or in your case the university would then have a greater interest in ensuring that you are gainfully employed following graduation. It might even lead for them reducing or cutting degrees that don't generate a lot of kickback revenue.
If supply/demand follows, then the positions that used to require degrees in those areas might not require degrees anymore because less students are graduating with them.

I believe that free university education is very important for a country. Germany would not be that economic powerhouse if we hadn't so many engineers.
However the university system works differently than that in the US I think.
Here, one can only go to university when he proved himself to be good in school or has a secondary eduaction (to compilacted to explain).

I agree that finances shouldn't be the chief barrier to higher education, intelligence should be, but keeping more people out of college isn't bad. The more people that go to college, the more college degrees as a whole will be discriminated against in the market and thus the value of the degree will go down. And since college is mandatory, those who don't choose to go for whatever reason will be invariably worse off than those who do go, and those who do go will also be worse off since more people have a degree. All this is going to do is make things ironically more unequal as it will jack up the prices of private institutions tuitions making those who can afford it better off because companies will value degrees from these institutions more as less people are graduating from them.
So when education is free:
-People who don't want to get a degree will be worse off since they'll be competing against those with degrees in the market at a higher rate. (Note most people who volunteer not to get a degree will probably be people of low incomes who can't afford not to have some steady income for 4+ years even if its minimum wage and they're stuck there for a long time)
-People who do go to University for free and graduate will find there degrees less and less valuable as more people graduate leaving more degree holders worse off. (Lower middleclass will probably fill this bracket the most with some of the poor)
-People who are really rich and can afford the now more expensive private institutions will be much better off as people will go to the free universities in droves. (Upper middle class/Rich)

Most people I study with (and I study engineering) have than an apprenticeship. Than you go to school for another year and the way to university is free for you.
One this to remember though, if you do this way you can't study whatever you want. If you want to go into the technical field and study engineering you need a technical apprenticeship.
The numerus clausus, the rating you need to study a field, is based on how many of your kind are needed in the economy. So it is 4.0 for engineering. This means you pretty much barely have to pass to be able to study engineering.
It is 1.3-1.7 for studing medicine.
Basically you can decide at every point in your life to try and go for more. In Germany everyone has the same opportunity. You just have to work your ass off at one point in your life.

Not everyone needs to or should be expected to go to college; that is such an unrealistic expectation at this point. After spending almost an entire life prior to turning 18 in school, its understandable that some people simply don't want to go to college, or now that they are legally adults they can't afford to go to college and not just because of tuition but because of the cost of them not earning a wage for their low income families. College should be reserved for those with a real passion for learning and who want to go into extremely specialized fields which will require a degree, not just as High School 2.0.
