In western countries, it is a temporary agreement of two people based mostly on economy (it is cheaper to live together) and an urge of having sex.
Since reproducing is in today world a least preferable strategy its aim is not upbringing of children. Having children is a heavy burden often considered a source of shame by the society (at least in Poland).

Marriage was important in the past, as family was a necessity in taking care of each other, job possibilities etc.
Today the state and technology in general have replaced those elements. If you're broke you can get welfare, if you get a baby you get child care, if you need a job the possibilities of finding one through the Internet etc. is a lot easier.
Granted having a nice family is still without a question one of the most important goals for me, most people end in divorce.
Also statistics show that the larger number of sexual partners people have, the lower is there ability to succeed in marriage and long term relationships in general.
For women having sex is now easier than ever, and with culture norm along with birth control nothing is holding them back.
When their biological clock starts ticking, they want to settle down with a guy, but unfortunately science shows that a mans semen is actually absorbed in the vagina and affects the DNA of offspring.
