The threat of war was presumed to deter Hitler, and when it did not, backing down and surrendering would be disastrous to Britain and France. Hitler's decision to invade Poland was entirely aggression, he was warned, multiple times of retaliation. Still, the Allies assumed after Poland, Hitler would back down, which he did not, further showing German aggression.
