Europe's prosperity came from conquering the world. America is simply the most populated European country. Additionally, it was the Saudi Arabia of the first half of the 20th century. Saudi Arabia free from foreign influences, with the largest civilized population, in a time prior to automated factories = industrial powerhouse. This would have happened no matter what the mainstream ideology spouted by politicians and intellectuals was. The real engine of progress is technology and resources, not idealistic notions of freedom and equality. Hence we conquer the CSA, profit from WW1, and conquer the world in WW2 - which a weakling intellectual like Rand apparently disagreed with. Apparently she would prefer Germany or Russia to be the ones with the greatest share of world capital, because of her pithy little ideals of freedom.
While industrial civilizations are concerned with little matters like keeping their billions of citizens in check and destroying all rivals, despite the drug hazed idealism of their losers (intellectuals), small tribes of foragers exist as a function of the direct relationships between their members. That's as close to egalitarianism or freedom or democracy or whatever you want to call it as you're going to get.

The problem I have with this are that free markets exist in spades throughout Africa. What makes America so successful is the ability of private citizens to use the state to profit. Patents, security of trade, binding agreements.
