>The new tobacco law gives the Food and Drug Administration authority to regulate tobacco in the same way the government regulates breakfast cereals and pharmaceuticals.

>The law means the government will have the power to decide how cigarettes are advertised and monitor how they're promoted to young people. It means cigarette makers will be required to include new, larger warning graphics with more health information on their products and will be prohibited from using words like "light" and "low tar" in their marketing.

>While the law does not have the power to ban cigarettes and nicotine outright, it does allow the FDA to reduce nicotine levels and harmful chemicals in tobacco products.
>>

Smoking advertisements have been heavily regulated for almost 50 years and much marketing has been outright banned. Tobacco companies can't advertise on television, sponsor music festivals, etc.

Is this news?
>>
>>55512604
Damn it, so its all tobacco not just cigarettes, plz dont fuck with pipe tobacco and loose tobacco.
>>
>>55512604
And you know that if a Dem gets in again, they'll promote weed as healthy and smokes as unhealthy.
Where in the fuck is the world going. I know smokes are unhealthy, but as a responsible adult, why can't I make the decision whether or not to smoke them?
>>
which is fine, would be nice to see the e-cig market bloom in a meaningful way, it's still way too much of a player's market.

also,

>>While the law does not have the power to ban cigarettes and nicotine outright, it does allow the FDA to reduce nicotine levels and harmful chemicals in tobacco products.

On paper, that sounds good. Not sure how it will work in practice. Isn't it those harmful chemicals that cause cancer for smokers and not the tobacco itself?

Nice trips, here's an article from TODAY:
http://thehill.com/regulation/healthcare/259920-hud-proposes-smoking-ban
>Smoking would be prohibited inside public housing units under new rules from the Obama administration.

>The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), along with the surgeon general, proposed new rules Thursday that would ban lit cigarettes, cigars and pipes from government-assisted housing projects for low-income families.

>The smoking ban would protect hundreds of thousands of public housing residents from the harmful effects of secondhand smoke, HUD noted.

>State and local public housing agencies would have 18 months to implement smoke-free policies not only inside the housing units but also in administrative offices and other indoor and outdoor common areas, according to HUD.

>The new smoke-free rules would apply to more than 940,000 that currently do not follow those recommendations.

>“Everyone — no matter where they live — deserves a chance to grow up in a healthy, smoke-free home,” added Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy. "There is no safe level of secondhand smoke. So, when 58 million Americans — including 15 million children — are exposed to secondhand smoke, we have an obligation to act.”
Does /pol/ support keeping residents who live in the Projects from having to deal with second-hand smoke?
>>
>>55513064

>>

>tfw you agree with the liberal agenda on pretty much everything but tobacco regulation
alcohol is largely unregulated, there's no reason for tobacco to be.
I believe the anti-tobacco campaign is largely motivated by the fact that big tobacco blatantly lied about its health impacts for years, and it's really just a punishment for them. (but the taxes, and excessive regulation hurts poor people economically, and reduces our freedom - mandated no smoking in businesses should not be a thing. It should be left to the business owners.
That's not what this country should be about.
How to fix?

>>
>>55514444
>Fucking Progressives
Hey, not all of us are like that.
I personally think this country's tobacco policies are REGRESSIVE, not progressive. For me, progressivism is about freedom and equality. America's anti-tobacco campaign is JUST THE OPPOSITE. The tobacco tax disproportionitely impacts the poor, and legislation that makes it impossible for smoking sections to exist blatantly tramples over the freedoms of the business owner.
Anti tobacco policy is by no means progressive.
>>
>>55512604
>it does allow the FDA to reduce nicotine levels
yeah totally to reduce smoking and not that they make more money bc people need to smoke then more for the same nicotine level.
>>
>>55514869

>The study found people who took 18 sleeping pills or fewer per year had more than 3.5 times higher a risk for death than those who didn't take any sleeping pills. What's more, people taking more than 132 sleeping pills per year were at five times higher risk for death and 35 percent higher risk for cancer.

Giving anything to the FDA basically kills it.

They are just trying to extract more money from the industry. By creating a complex and incomprehensible web of regulations, they ensure that companies will find themselves in violation.

Massive fines are imposed. Companies cannot fight them.

>June 8, 2004 -- Former smokers can expect to live as long and healthfully as nonsmokers if they manage to quit for at least 15 years before they turn age 50, suggests new research.

>"Smoking is harmful at any age, but if you stop smoking before age 35 you may still do pretty well in terms of living longer and having a better quality of life as you reach middle age," says researcher Truls Ostbye, MD, PhD, of Duke University School of Medicine. "By quitting for at least 15 years prior to age 50, you may be able to regain your health as well as people who never smoked."

>After analyzing data on some 21,000 Americans 50 and older, he and Duke colleague Donald Taylor, PhD, estimate that people who quit for at least 15 years before reaching middle age are likely to regain the two years usually lost to smoking -- living as long and as well as those who never smoked.

>>
If people want to quit they will take the effort to try and quit. The government will never strong arm people into quitting. Now people are going to smoke more, pay more and pad the pockets of the tobacco companies.

All this does is contribute to the bloat of government and the FDA is corrupt as fuck (turning a blind eye to Nestle.) Hell, the tobacco companies will probably pay them off with the added revenue they will get.

Ausfag here, looks like you'll be getting the jolly pictures we've had here for a few years.

Oh, and they shut down any company that tries to make devices such as throwaway stickers or an external carton to cover up the pictures quickly (meaning you have to buy a metal cigarette book or something to store your smokes).

Personally I'm all for it. Not sure how it works on your end with healthcare, but I don't see why my tax money should go to pay for the medical bills of people who had a habit they chose not to stop. I feel the same way about obesity too though.

On a side note, it does make for amusing conversations at the tobacconist.

You know anti-smoking ads increase smoker's cravings? Researchers put some smokers into a MRI machine while they showed anti-smoking images such as warning labels on packs. While the subjects overwhelmingly said that the images made them want to quit, the machine actually showed an increase craving for cigarettes.

Read about it in this book about neuromarketting "Buyology." I can't get an online excerpt but this talks about it.

Your logic is fucked.

Medicaid pays out 22 billion dollars a year on ciggarette related illnesses alone. If you can't find logic in legislation aimed at preventing new smokers from starting such as more visable warnings and less propaganda meant to entice new young smokers than frankly you are irrelevant to the conversation.

No one is banning cigarettes here. There is no loss of
>muh freedoms

Common sense preventative measures are being take and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

However, indeed, my PERSONAL opinion is that they are banned if we are going to continue to allow people who are using tax funded medical services to drive up costs into the tens of billions and make people who actually care for there health and work towards being healthy suffer a less robust medical plan and pay for disgusting smokers and otherwise fat or lazy or otherwise unhealthy slobs.

Okay, I believe in freedom, and equality.
That means equal opportunity.
That means being able to make your own life choices.
I really don't understand why you need me to clarify this.
Lots of "progressive" causes, are contrary to one or both of these. They aren't truly progressive, but rather another agenda entirely.
These two things are NOT mutually exclusive. However we need a regulated economy to ensure that the poor have as much opportunity as the privileged, and we need to avoid becoming a dictator ship that decides people's life choices for them.

But smoking is good for the country, literally.

I work in the healthcare field. 80% of all medical expenses in this country are spent on those who are age 70 or older.

All the blood you donate? goes to a senior citizen to have their hip surgery.
Organs? Usually a senior citizen.
Hospital time? Again, seniors spend decades here sucking up resources.
Medical Malpractice claims? Most (if not all of them) arise from senior citizens dying on the table.

If half the population smoked, our health and medical costs would drop precipitously because people would no longer live to 70+. Instead of hogging resources they would be fucking dead and the world could move on.
