they're not the same, and american conservative means something different entirely.
In the US conservatism is doing as little as possible for the maximum benefit of society.
Dont take away any rights unless the societal detriment to those rights is so severe that it endangers the existence of society.
Don't give new rights to anyone unless they are significantly and measurably unprotected by existing rights.
Don't tax unless you are paying for essential things.
Don't overspend unless it is an emergency.
Use government power to encourage, not mandate behavior that is great for the prosperity of the country (child tax credits, getting drivers licenses, being required to attend school if you are a minor)
the hierarchical claim in particular is part of european politics, but it is not part of american politics. We're pretty much all egalitarian at a minimum, with liberals actually believing in the hierarchy a bit more, hence why they feel the need to uplift individuals.

classical liberalism IS traditional conservatism in the US.
Conservatism in the US references our own founding fathers. That's why you couldn't really call hamilton or jefferson a conservative and liberal. Hamilton was very authoritarian, and jefferson was his opposite, but jefferson also was fairly progressive. But even that is different given the time.
Conservatism really was about the generation after Jackson's, the ones born into the US, not the colonies. They witnessed the fast growth of the country and how individual states wanted to, at times, skirt the constitution, and gain more power over their populace, and they rejected that, wanting to pull back.
The republicans ended up doing the same exact thing in the following century, pushing too far away from the constitution, which is why modern conservatism has it's splinter branch of nigh-libertarians, the tea party.
