Don't be fooled, the JSDF is pretty tough and capable of more than just self-defense. They've also got much better equipment than the Chinese, in part because of American backing, and in part because unlike the Chinese, the Japs are capable of building things that don't randomly explode.
The US is also encouraging Japan to spend more on military, and Japan is in the process of removing a lot of the pacifistic stuff from its laws. There's no doubt that Chinese expansionism is at least a part of this.
